Massive volcanic eruptions over the past 260 million years caused climate changes and mass extinction events, according to a study published in Earth-Science Reviews. The eruptions released large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, resulting in extreme greenhouse climate warming. These events occurred every 26 to 33 million years and coincided with changes in the Earth's orbit. Researchers also highlight the need to understand how astronomical movements affect geological processes.
